Bitcoin est le pionnier des blockchains et des cryptomonnaies, introduit en livre blanc publié en 2008 par une personne ou un groupe de personnes apparemment pseudonymes connu(s) sous le nom de Satoshi Nakamoto. Le document décrivait une méthode peer-to-peer de transfert d'argent sans recours aux institutions financières. La cryptomonnaie connue sous le nom de bitcoin ou BTC a fait ses débuts en 2009. Les transactions sont enregistrées sur un registre public (un blockchain) par des entités connues sous le nom de {{espace}}mineurs{{espace}} qui participent à un processus appelé preuve de travail.
