Bitcoin
Bitcoin is de pionier van blockchains en cryptocurrencies, geïntroduceerd in een white paper uitgebracht in 2008 door een schijnbaar pseudoniem persoon of groep personen bekend als Satoshi Nakamoto. Het document beschreef een peer-to-peer methode voor het overmaken van geld zonder gebruik te maken van financiële instellingen. De cryptocurrency bekend als bitcoin of BTC debuteerde in 2009. Transacties worden vastgelegd op een openbaar grootboek (een blockchain) door entiteiten bekend als miners die deelnemen aan een proces genaamd proof-of-work. Mijnwerkers worden hiervoor beloond met nieuw geminte bitcoin. Sommige voorstanders zien BTC als een alternatief voor fiatvaluta's en als een bescherming tegen inflatie. Bitcoin heeft de creatie van talrijke andere cryptocurrencies en blockchainprojecten geïnspireerd.
